Wedding dresses for women who don’t like wedding dresses

Upon becoming engaged three-and-a-half years ago, I immediately began
thinking about the style of wedding dress I wanted to wear. Since I am most
positively not one of the dreaming-about-weddings-since-I-was-a-little-girl kind
of woman, I was totally unprepared for what was to come.

The wedding dresses I initially tried on at a few local bridal shops were, on
the whole, dreadful. Stiff and uncomfortable with exaggerated proportions,
weighed down with extensive beading and detailing, and as expensive as a
semester in graduate school (which, frankly, sounded more appealing to me than a
princess-y dress I’d wear only once). I already knew what I wanted: something
simple yet unique that made me feel beautiful, but still made me feel like
myself. I also wanted something reasonably comfortable that I’d be able to dance
in, because the thought of not being able to dance at my own wedding was
downright depressing.

Wedding dress hits the road

We’ve all heard of runaway brides – but a runaway wedding dress is another
story.That’s what several Strathcona County RCMP officers came across last week
when they found a storage box containing a strapless, intricately beaded wedding
dress on Highway 216 near the Whitemud Drive overpass.

FELL FROM VEHICLE

It appears the box had tumbled out of a moving vehicle onto the road around
June 11 unbeknownst to the person transporting the precious package, said Staff
Sgt. Brian Cottell.

“We certainly want to marry it, so to speak, with its owner,” he said, adding
he’s never come across such an unusual find in the last 30 years.

“Can you imagine the panic in some young lady’s eyes, who bought this dress
with the view of getting it pressed and ready for her wedding day and getting
home to who knows where to say, ‘Where is the box?’ “

CPAs offer advice on cutting wedding costs

June is wedding season, and if you’re starting to plan for your own
nuptials, you know that prices can be steep. In fact, the average cost of a
wedding in the United States is around $28,000. However, the Oklahoma Society of
Certified Public Accountants reminds consumers that it is possible to have a
memorable day without going broke.• Avoid the crowds.

June is the
most popular time to schedule a ceremony, which also means it tends to be the
most expensive. Caterers, reception halls and other vendors are much more likely
to offer better pricing — or be willing to negotiate on costs — if you set the
date during the slower months of the year, such as January, March or November.
You can also lower costs by avoiding a Saturday night wedding, which is the
busiest time for receptions, and have the party on a Friday night or Saturday
afternoon.

Moos & ‘I do’s

GUSTAVUS – Cristin Goldner of Warren said her new husband, Stephen Grant,
wanted a rodeo-style wedding, so she made sure that happened. The two exchanged
vows Friday at the Double L Rodeo in Gustavus as six very curious bulls walked
around the penned-in ceremony.More than 20 people attended, sitting in the viewing stands as the bridal
party stood inside the pen in the center of the square rodeo arena.

Once the bridal party was enclosed, the bulls were released from their nearby
pens.

At first the bulls stood in one area, but soon began traveling as a group
around the outskirts of the arena. The bulls ambled around the pen, often
pausing to study the ceremony as if trying to figure out what was going on.

bridal shop owners and event rental merchants, are largely a recession-proof
business, even in the darkest depths of our beaten-down economy that is
beginning to show a few signs of fluttering back to life.
The cost of a typical wedding in the United States may send some
sticker-shocked brides and grooms to seek out a justice of the peace, but many
more couples – part of an annual multibillion-dollar industry – are willing to
spend an average of $18,000 to $22,000 for the works, from clothing and cakes to
catering and thank-you cards, said LeAnne White, owner of Downtown Gowns, a
special occasion clothing store in Vacaville.While the No. 1 trend in weddings in 2009 is laid-back, outdoor ceremonies,
some might argue the latest vogue is penny-pinching, given some of White’s
observations.
